Distance makes the heart fonder, 2024

Distance makes the heart fonder is inspired by my nightly "rituals", where I stop to look at windows of residential spaces every night on my way back home. Through this act of gazing, I find myself longing to connect with the people inside, knowing they share similar routines or habits to me — yet being unable to get closer without intrusion. The windows invite connection, yet are a constant reminder of a barrier between me and those unknown, becoming symbols of longing and yearning.

Through this artwork, I invite the audience to participate in my ritual. When standing afar, the window is brightly lit, inviting one to approach it. The closer one gets, however, the light slowly dims, and finally switches off when one is too close — letting audiences passively observe but not actively intrude this unknown private space, just as I do.
